Just before sunrise, hundreds of colorful balloons lift off over Göreme at the same moment. Drifting above the fairy chimneys, the valleys and the rock-hewn churches is one of the most unforgettable experiences you can have in Türkiye. In this guide you'll find the best season for a balloon tour, price ranges and everything to look out for when booking.

The best season and flight times

Although balloon tours run year-round, the ideal window is April–June and September–November, when weather conditions are more stable. Flights start about an hour before sunrise and last around 60 minutes. Flights can be cancelled when wind speeds exceed the safety limit; for this reason we recommend staying at least two nights in Cappadocia and scheduling your tour for the first morning of your trip. That way, if it's cancelled, you have a backup chance the next day.

Watching the sunrise from the balloon basket, Cappadocia's landscape — shaped over millions of years — stretches out beneath your feet.

Prices and booking

Prices vary by season, flight duration and the number of people in the basket. A standard tour averages €100–150 per person, while comfort flights in small 8–12 person baskets can reach €200. The price usually includes hotel pick-up and drop-off, pre-flight refreshments, a champagne celebration after landing and a flight certificate.

When booking, make sure the operator holds a licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and check the pilots' experience. Slots fill up quickly in summer and especially on weekends, so we recommend reserving your tour at least two weeks in advance. Bookings made through SpeakToHotel also come with a free cancellation option.

Tips for flight day

On the morning of your flight, bring layered clothing suited to the season; the valleys can be chilly around sunrise. Don't forget to secure your camera or phone with a strap. After the flight, you can round off your day visiting the Göreme Open-Air Museum, Pigeon Valley and Uçhisar Castle.

Getting there and where to stay

To reach Cappadocia you can fly into Nevşehir or Kayseri; both airports have regular transfer services to Göreme and Ürgüp. For accommodation, the rock-carved cave hotels are one of the region's most special experiences; at hotels famous for their balloon-view terraces you can watch the sunrise from your own room. Besides the balloon tour, ATV safaris, horseback riding and valley hikes are all popular activities in the area. In winter, the snow-covered fairy chimneys offer an entirely different atmosphere — off-season travelers enjoy both lower prices and a quieter experience.
